Subject: I wouldn't believe this myself either...

If anyone would have stepped up to me two and a half years ago to tell me I would become a Marathon Runner, improve my personal life in different area's and lose over 44 Pounds, I would have never believed it.

At that time I was struggling with many things in my personal life. I was way too fat so I seriously needed to lose a lot of weight plus I had the feeling that I wasn?t succeeding in anything?

?I Wanted To Accomplish Something Big... But I Had No Clue What To Do??

I used to hate going on a diet and my weight went up and down all the time ever since I was young. I was feeling tired almost all of the time so about 2,5 years ago I decided I desperately needed to change some major things in my life. I just wasn?t happy and things needed to change...

?I Decided to Run A Marathon??

How and why did I decide to run a marathon? Was I crazy?

First, let me go back 2,5 years ago?

23rd of September 2004:

I was at my parents place for a visit. We were barbequing and enjoying some nice cold beers and a bunch of spare-ribs. My father had a lot to do with my decision to start training for a marathon
?
My father had been a sportsman since he was 29 years old. Before he reached that age he was kind of like me. He drank and ate a lot, didn?t feel fit and just didn?t succeed in anything.

On that day, my father told me sports had changed his life

He also told me how he got started. He couldn?t even run for one minute when he was 29 years old. This was kind of hard for me to understand because I have always known him as a sportsman. However, when he was 40 years old he finished his first triathlon (that?s 4 kilometres swimming, 180 kilometres cycle racing and 42 kilometres running? beat that!)

He had won a lot of prices before he reached that ?milestone? and in my opinion he is still a big sportsman (He is 54 years old now)

His life became so much better after he started practicing sports. At the age of 29, my father was in the same situation as I was, the only difference was that he was a few years older.

?So If He Could Do It At That Time, Why Couldn?t I??

These are the things I wanted to accomplish at that time:

?finish my study;

?start my own business;

lose weight;

feel good and look better;

accomplish ?something??

Then I said it: that ?something? turned out to be (And yes they laughed, very hard)

?I Am Going To Run A Marathon!??

?Is it possible??, I asked my father. He told me the Rotterdam Marathon was going to be in April so I had almost seven months to prepare for it. So in theory, it would be possible. I don?t think he actually believed me though (I said it while I was eating a bunch of spareribs with a beer in my hand)

So I decided to DO it, and honestly, I DID believe in myself. Almost seven months later, I had lost 44 pounds, finished my study, set up several businesses, learned to speak a foreign language and felt and looked much better?

The only way to do it was to set a goal and to simply don?t stop before I reached that goal (I will tell you more about setting goals (and how it can change your life) later on this page.)

So that?s what I did, I set a goal?

?And I Did It! (Within 6,5 Months)?

???

?I Went From Being Way Too Fat, Feeling Miserable And Having No Energy To Becoming A Marathon Runner Within 6,5 Months, And I Never Looked Back??

After only 6,5 months of training! And guess what? It wasn?t even that hard! I even lost more weight after I finished my first marathon?

That?s right, it?s the truth! It did change my life to the extreme (and so can yours) but first I will tell you how and why I decided to run a marathon.

?Seriously, If I Can Do It, You Can Do It Too??

It changed my life, and it can change your life too. I decided that if I could do it, I could also help others and actually I did help others?I will show you some examples later on this page but first you need to read on to get the rest of the story.

I never would have thought that I was actually able to help others with running. I?m not a skinny athlete, still got ?big bones ;)? but I did manage to help myself to the better and even more important, I helped a lot of people with my free tips, tricks and techniques. I received over a thousand messages on my website and I received countless emails from runners all over the world.

Whenever I start to hesitate I simply look back at where I was (before I started running) and how I felt after finishing my first marathon and suddenly it feels like everything is possible.

This principle alone made my life so much better and made me do things I would never have dreamed off two years ago and I can only imagine what this principle will do for me for the rest of my life? seriously!

My friends (and family) all laughed when I said that I was going to run a marathon but I didn?t listen to them. After I finished my first marathon I did set up some other ?big goals? which I never would have thought I would accomplish two years ago but I also achieved these goals all because of one simple principle which I will talk about later on this page.

I feel like I?m getting off track now?

?I Wanted To Give Back To All The People That Have Been So Kind To Me?

The success stories I received made a big impact on me so I had the feeling I had to give back to all the great people who contacted me to tell me their success stories. I literally put all my free time of the last couple of months in this project but it has been the greatest thing I ever did since I finished my first marathon? This is like another milestone for me?

So what did I do the last couple of months?

I decided to put up a program which can help you even more. It took me months of my free time to finish this program and I am convinced that this program will help you with running? And with life!

That?s right, this program won?t just help with running but if you apply all these principles, strategies and techniques it will increase the quality of your personal life also which I will also be covering later on this page.

Here?s What You Will Discover In This Exclusive, Never Seen Before Program??

?Run That Marathon Multimedia Program?

The last couple of months I?ve been working on this program and as I said earlier, this is another milestone for me and this could be the beginning of something big for you.

Here?s an overview of what you will discover in this program. I divided it in 8 parts for your convenience so whenever you want access to this material you can get it quick and easy.

Part 1

?The Motivational Part?

I am not a motivational speaker like Tony Robbins or any other self improvement guru but I did find out a lot of techniques which are helping me to move forward in my live (and I?ve seen others implement these techniques which helped them to the extreme) so this is a very important part.

?Just Implement These Techniques And It Will Change Your Life? Guaranteed!?

You will discover everything you need to know about how to achieve big things for the rest of your live (and of course how to run a marathon which is a big achievement).

This is what you will discover in the first section of this program :

How to take action, and why it is so important to take serious action. If you apply to this principle it will change your life? Seriously!

Why you are not too old to start running. Believe me, I?ve seen 77 year olds running their first (!) marathon! Unbelievable!

How and why you need to make a plan and what this will do for your progress

How to never make an excuse again to skip a training. If you apply to this principle you WILL run a marathon!

Why you should never let anyone discourage you from running. This rule can be applied not only with running but is a life lesson on its own. (This will help you get what you want faster than you could ever imagine)

How to get disciplined. (this one is so important). First running has to become a routine. Once the line between routine and discipline fades then you got it made!

How to set a goal and why this will help you become a marathon runner. Before I started training I couldn?t imagine myself running 6 miles, but once I set the goal to run the marathon everything changed?

Why you have to think and talk about it all the time. This might sound a little strange but it does help tremendous!

Why you have to be patient. You (most likely) won?t become a marathon runner within a month, but you will get there once you get the patience you need.

How everything gets clear while you are running (I came up with the best ideas while I was running)

My golden rule and why this golden rule made me achieve results extremely fast

How to get motivated at times you feel like giving up

How to deal with the bad days (you will get bad days? I?m sorry!

How to constantly get out of your comfort zone (do this and you will achieve goals bigger than you ever imagined.

You will notice that this part of the program will motivate you to start running and to keep on running until you have achieved your goal (which of course is what this program is made for). However, when you apply these principles on other parts of your life you can achieve tremendous goals.

Part 2

?How To Get Started?

Ok, so you?ve set your goals and you need to know what you need to do to reach that goal but now you got to get started (this is the hardest part. If you?re already running regularly you?re already right on track. If not, it?s okay!)

This part of the program will help you get started.

In part 2 of this program you will discover:

How to get started (even if you never ran a mile before, You will discover how and when you can start training for a marathon, and actually become a marathon runner too! (you will get there? Step by step!)

A detailed running schedule. You will know exactly when you need to run, how often you need to run and the exact distances. You will receive three different running schedules : novice, advanced and excellent.

Why you should take it slow (if you?re not too experienced)

How to get of the couch when you?re too tired to run

How to bridge the gap between knowing and doing

There are a few key elements you need to apply to get started and to get going. Chances are that you?ll get out of your routine once in a while (that?s okay) but it?s imported to get started again! That?s what this part of the program is for.

Part 3

?How To Handle Food and Drinks, and How To Lose Weight!"

When I started out running? I didn?t exactly know what to eat, when to eat and drink and what the best way was to lose that weight. Please note that losing weight wasn?t my primary goal, it came as an extra advantage on the way to my marathon (as many other advantages that will occur when you are training for your marathon).

Once you find out how to handle your food, drinks and how to lose weight it will become easier and you can achieve your goal even faster!

How to lose more weight by running less hard

Why you should focus on the running, not the weight loss

When to eat (before or after running?)

How and why you should test the food you eat

What (and how) to eat during your trainings (or the marathon)

What to drink before, during and after running

How to manage drinks and food during the longer trainings

How much you should eat and drink the days before a marathon

So now you know what to eat before, during and after you run which is quite important especially when you are going to run longer and more often. It?s time to move on to your clothing. You can get started, keep going and know what to eat but all of this can be useless if you wear the wrong clothes (especially your shoes). Let?s get to part 4!

Part 4

??What Clothes To Wear, What Shoes To Buy?

I?ve seen so many people run on the wrong shoes which injured them for the rest of their lives. Next to the injuries (which we will talk about later on) it is very important to choose the right clothes so you can make progress even faster. It can be those small things which can help you tremendously during your trainings.

Here?s a short overview of what you will discover in Part 4 of this program

What socks to wear during your trainings (yes, that?s important too!)

Why you shouldn?t save money on your running shoes. Your feet are important, you might need them once!

What running shoes to buy when you are overweight (been there done that J)

How to look great during training. (you don?t have to feel embarrassed while you?re running!)

How to wear your clothes (this one is important for the heavy ?sweaters?)

When to buy new running shoes (neglect this advice and you will get injured) and how many pairs of shoes you actually need

So now you know what clothes to wear and what shoes to buy, but this isn?t a guarantee to stay out of injuries. Of course the right clothes and shoes are very important for you not getting injured however there are a lot of other things you need to know to stay out of injuries, so let?s move on to the next part of this program ?how to stay out of injuries?.

Part 5

??How To Stay Out Of Injuries?

Well this might not sound too exciting but whenever you are going to be a runner, you will get injured. It might be a nasty injury or smaller injuries but you will get them. This doesn?t have to be a big problem if you can manage to prevent yourself from getting big injuries.

On my way to my first marathon I got injured several times but there is a way to deal with it. (I broke my hand 3,5 months before my first marathon so I had to walk with plaster bandage for a whole month. This was my ?nastiest? injury on my way to my first marathon.)

Of course the best way to stay out of injuries is to prevent it. This is what this part of the program is all about. Maybe not so exciting but extremely important!

In Part 5 of this program you will discover :

How to NOT get hit by a car during running in the night J

Why it might be a good idea to start training with a heart rate monitor

How to prevent sweat coming into your eyes while you are running

How to prevent cramp. You don?t want to have cramps during training. It will slow you down and it is hard to enjoy running while having pain

How to use cross-training to prevent injuries

How to not get a cold in the winter or during rainy days

How to stay out of nasty injuries by walking on the ?right? side of the road

Why you should and why you shouldn?t run in circles

Why you should NOT run the same circle you always do (it sounds strange, but this one will prevent injuries also

How to avoid dehydration (which is often overlooked, but extremely important)

How to prevent headaches during or after your training

Why you need to run on the left side of the road (except for the British)

How to cope with injuries? Don?t let the injuries win from you!

How to prevent blisters, or how to deal with them

Once you?ve found out how to stay out of injuries you are ready to actually start implementing all these strategies out of this program. Here comes the fun part!

Part 6

?Running Tips, Tricks And Techniques?

In this part of the program you will discover how you can run longer, faster and further. Once you?ve reached the point where you can run longer than you could ever imagine you have to apply these running tips, tricks and techniques. You will discover how to keep on going when you feel like giving up, what speed to run and a lot more other great strategies which helped me (and many others) improve my training to the extreme!

In this (extremely important) part of the program you will find out:

How you can avoid running with a bottle of water in your hands (or jacket)

Why you should run in quiet surroundings

When to run (in the morning, afternoon of evening?)

How to make your results measurable and what this will do for you

How to do a ?warming-up?

How to cool down

How to stretch, and when

Why you should run slower than you would like to.

Why you shouldn?t run more than two long distances a week

How to use my ?pick a point technique? (this one has helped so many runners, I invented it! ;)

How to improve your speed

Why you should listen to your body (and not your mind!)

What to do when you haven?t followed your running schedule

Why you should run different races before you start running a marathon

How far you should run before running a marathon

Once you?ve applied all the principles above you have discovered that running long distances isn?t as hard as it looks like. You will find out that running even can be fun! (I used to hate running up until 3 years ago!).

Part 7

?How To Enjoy Running?

This part of the program might sound fun (and it is) but this part is also extremely important. As for anything else in life, you got to love what you do! As I said earlier, I used to hate running up until three years ago. Now I can?t live without it. I spoke to many people who also disliked running and now they are addicted!

It might sound strange but this part of the program can really take you?re running career to a higher level!

In Part 7 of this program you will find out :

Why you should buy an mp3 player. Once you do this it will make your trainings much more fun (and easier!)

How to come up with great (business) ideas during running (and how to NOT forget them)

Why you should run outside instead of inside on a treadmill

How to plan your time efficiently. Running will take a lot of your time so you need to plan your time efficiently. You will love this one!

Why you should (or shouldn?t!) get a running buddy

How to actually enjoy running (I used to hate running, now I?m addicted!)

How you can educate yourself during training (this one made me finish my college and learn a foreign language)

Why (and how) listen to songs will make running easier for you!

Well, after you put all these strategies to action you eventually WILL come to the point that you are able to run a marathon. (or any other distance, if your goal is 10 kilometres ALL these principle will work too!).

Training and being able to run a marathon isn?t everything. You need to know what to do before, during and after your marathon. I was extremely nervous when I ran my first marathon so do not underestimate this part of the program!

Part 8

?What To Do Before, During And After Your First (Marathon) Race?

Even if you followed all the steps of this program, you can still fail during your marathon if you don?t follow these procedures. Don?t ruin your first marathon by making these mistakes! Just follow this step by step part of this program and you can (and must) enjoy your first marathon!

How much you should drink the days before a marathon

What and how much you should eat the day before the marathon

How to manage your sleep one day before the marathon

How to act during the marathon

Easy tips, tricks and techniques for your first marathon

Which speed you should run during the marathon

How to ?warm up? for the marathon

How to ?run your own race? in your own speed

What to do after the marathon

And much, much more?

Hi Eelco,

Your tips are very good. insightful and encouraging, even if like me you aren?t in training for a marathon, but just want to improve general fitness, as running can be done no matter what country you are in, all you need are your shoes.

I really enjoyed reading. However but I still have not lost as much weight as I'd liked as I thought by this time, i.e. 5mths on, that I'd have lost half a stone. Admittedly I only run approx 20 minutes for an average of 4 evenings (at least). Although I see an improvement in fitness compared to when I started, I again imagined I'd be able to do my 20min run without stopping which I can't.

I still seem to have to stop running and walk (approx 4 times during my run). Unlike you and some of your readers I am unable to keep running regardless, but maybe that?s mind over matter?

Initially I was running in the wrong footwear and endured pains/strains which would force me to stop running every couple of days or so. But since January when I got myself specialised running shoes for outdoors I have no pains, strains whatsoever.

I am amazed at the difference.

Kind regards,

Micheale

Dear Eelco,

I really appreciate your info, as there are very few people out there who take time and effort to offer such excellent tips. Keep up the good work. congrats and thanks.

I had been running for more than two years, but had to discontinue because of knee pain. I have started again but now I am jogging only for fear of a relapse of knee pain.

I had accidentally stumbled on your site and after seeing your tips and advice I have started again. I am making little progress now as I don?t want to get hurt again.

Thank you,

Rajin Ikhaanth

Hi Eelco,

Hi Eelco,

I look forward to your messages and tips, they are kind of like little bursts of motivation.

I have began running outside more versus the treadmill also!

?I Will Be 65 This Summer And In 5 Months I Am Up To Jogging 4 Miles. Everytime I Thought Of Stopping I Would Remember You Making That Statement And It Kept Me Going. Thank You So Much.?

Dear Eelco,

I would love to receive more tips of you.

I will be 65 this summer and in 5 months I am up to jogging 4 miles. I loved your tip about not stopping for anything. Slow down but do not stop because it is hard to start again.

I started with a combination of jogging and walking and kept at it till now I can jog for an hour non stop. Every time I thought of stopping I would remember you making that statement and it kept me going. Thank you so much.

?You Have Walked Me Through It All And I Would Love To Continue Receiving Your Tips.?

Dear Eelco,

I think that yours tips are very motivational and have helped me every time I get on the road for a run. My favourite is "pick a point". Where you pick an object and run to it.... then pick another.

I had a couple of friends that were running the Country Music Marathon and they inspired me. I never said that I was going to run but I set little goals, 5K, 10K and now it is time my next goal is the CMM 1/2 Marathon.

Once I have done that I would like to begin training for a full marathon. I feel that because of the toll that it takes on your body I would like to plan for at least 6-12 months for the full.

You have walked me through it all and I would love to continue receiving your tips.

I feel that I have struggled with my training. I've gotten sick 3 times in 4 months the last was the flu. Come to find out you shouldn't give blood while training.

Thanks a lot,

Hi Eelco!

I think your tips are great

I am training for the Gold Coast Half Marathon again this year (July 2007) I completed this last year and it was the first run I had ever participated in and I was quiet happy with my time (2hrs 18 min)

I am 6 weeks back into training and still feel most of the runs are hard.

?I Spread Your Ideas To Many Colleagues And Friends.?

Dear Eelco,

I find your tips about training and preparation for the Marathon great. I share your training tips with my running friends; they also find this of great value. Keep on the good work!

I have been going through some consolidation stage using your tips; also one tends to run more slowly and build up endurance during the winter season.

Our running paths can be slippery during winter, due to snow, sleed and blowing rain and other things. I?ll soon start more speed work and then count on your tips that I have been using this winter.

I find your ideas great and an inspiration to anyone interested in running - I spread your ideas to many colleagues and friends.

I live in Reykjavik, Iceland. Running is quite popular in Iceland as all sport in general. We have several running happenings all over the year but the single biggest competition for general runners is The Reykjavik Marathon, this year on August 18, offering A Fun run of 3.5 km, 10 K, Half Marathon and a Marathon. Participants anround 3000.

Hi Eelco!

The tips are good and let me know I can continue. I have been running 5K. Actually walk/run. I work to close the gap and run the full5K I think persistence and permission to walk is my answer.

I?ve been running on and off for ten years now.

I have made mental progress and some distance.

I am in China. Shenyang, to be exact. I run inside because of pollution. I am not fond of treadmill but it is the choice now. Spring is coming and there is a wonderful park. I will go there.

Hope to run a 10K in Beijing at the Great Wall. Running is mental. My body is ready to get that 5K but my mind ..... Mental suggestions. I feel powerful just finishing the walk/run. I have done this before but I must re-establish with myself that I can.

Kind Regards,

Constance

Eelco,

I found your website encouraging and it filled a valuable niche for me.

I only seriously began training for a marathon in Sept. 2006. Your site gave me and my training buddies a few good ideas and techniques, as well as the knowledge that many others were going through the same challenges as we were.

In all, twenty of us from Saudi Arabia travelled to Roma for the 13th Rome Marathon on March 18, 2007. For most of us it was our first attempt at a marathon, and incredibly, all twenty of us completed it in under 5 hours 15 minutes!

Dear Eelco,

You?re tips are inspiring!

I was walking on and off for almost four years but last year because of a friend who encouraged me to jog, I did (that was June. For four months, I was running the same route and felt no progress. In fact, I even gained weight. Last Dec to Jan, I decided to change my route and go on a diet.

Last Feb, I joined my first 10km run. Last week, I did another 10km and is looking forward to more and longer distance running. I lost more than 10 kilos.

I love running. My week would not be complete if I don't jog. Am setting goals for long distance runs. I don't care if I don't win. I just want to finish the race.

I live in mountains of Baguio City, north of the Philippines. Cool city. Great for training, clean air, a lot of routes..

Hi Eelco,

very helpful information, I did not have a goal so my motivation was not very good, now I have a goal and a time line, so I feel that I can not skip a training day.

I was recently in a car accident, so I missed a week and a half of training, but I am back on my feet and training again, I think if I didn't have a goal in mind, I would not have got back into it again.

Hi Eelco,

Your tips are fantastic! you inspired me to start a running program to keep a promise I made with my son who I expect will be declared "cancer free" in November. he wants to run a half marathon at Disneyland on Labour Day.

I have gone from walking a mile then running a half mile around a track then walking home. Now I walk the mile at a quick pace to the track and run a mile and a half then walk home.

?When I Get Tired During My Training And Feeling That I Can't Run Anymore, I Just Think On Your Tips And My Frustration Gets By And I Can Finish My Goal.?

Dear Eelco,

?I Couldn't Believe How Fast I Started To Progress After That. If I Had Followed The Advice Of Others, I Would Have Been Discouraged And Probably Would Not Have Kept Up With Running.?

Hi Eelco,

I have really enjoyed reading the tips. They have kept me motivated. I have downloaded many so that I can read them again and again. Some I have heard before, so nice refresher, others are brand new and helpful.

I was not able to start with the 3-5 mile suggestion, so I started with minutes and didn't focus on distance. This helped a lot. I started by running 10 minutes, then 12, then 15, then 20, 25, 30, 35. At 35 minutes, I started focusing on how far I was going which really, really motivated me.

I couldn't believe how fast I started to progress after that. If I had followed the advice of others, I would have been discouraged and probably would not have kept up with running. I was so glad that you suggested starting with minutes.

Brilliant suggestion for beginners.

?I Couldn?t Run Even 1 Mile Because I Went Too Fast. After I Read Your Message I Went Out And Ran As Slow As I Could. Guess what? I RAN 3 MILES!?

Eelco,

I think this is a wonderful site for people that are new to running and fitness. Some have never done anything and others have let themselves go. Too many other programs assume that you have some level of fitness before you start. You understand that many of us have to improve and work up to what they consider the beginning.

I started indoors on a treadmill because of the weather and when I went out I didn't know how to pace myself. I couldn?t run even 1 mile, I went too fast. After I read your blog I went out and ran as slow as I could. Guess what? I RAN 3 MILES!

My first race ever was the Shamrock Shuffle 8K on March 25, 2007. I injured my leg and had to walk a little but I finished in 1hour. I can't wait to do more.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to your emails and they help me to stay motivated. Helps me when I get a little down that I am not too old (52) too fat, too slow, whatever.
